Living in Brazil as a digital nomad
Located in South America, Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world. It borders almost every other South American country except Ecuador and Chile. It’s a tropical country with many geographical features ranging from deserts to rainforests and mountains. The country is also famous for its culture, sports, and architecture. So whether you like escaping into nature or enjoying food and events, Brazil has it all.
Attractions and best places to visit
Most of the Amazon rainforest, also called ‘the lungs of the Earth,’ is located in Brazil and is home to the Amazon river, the 2nd longest river in the world. This makes Brazil incredibly biodiverse, with a total of at least four million plant and animal species. In addition, there are a whopping 21 Unesco World Heritage Sites located in Brazil.
One of the best known is the Iguacu National Park, with one of the world’s largest and most impressive waterfalls at 1.7 miles wide and 275 drops. It is also home to many endangered species, such as the giant otter and the giant anteater.
Some of the newest ones also added to the list of Unesco are the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, a garden city project by Oscar Niemeyer, and the Valongo Wharf Archeological Site.
According to some estimates, around 6.4 million tourists visit this South American nation each year, and it is continuing to attract more digital nomads.
The nation is also an adrenaline seekers paradise with different kinds of thrilling sports adventures. Popular sports for digital nomads in Brazil include cycling, rock climbing, kayaking, surfing, trekking, and more.
Brazil has a ton to offer digital nomads and remote workers. Digital nomads flock there for the landscapes, activities, entertainment, rich culture, and cities.
Digital Nomad Hotspots
If you are tired of hours working in winters, you can move to Brazil to see exotic beaches, towering mountains, and wonderfully made streets, giving your working vacation a unique flavor.

Cost of Living

The average one-bedroom apartment can run you anywhere from $500USD to $1000USD, depending on the city and area.
While cities like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasilia are the most expensive, the feather you are from big cities, the cheaper the living costs. The cheapest places are Salvador, Vitória, Goiânia, and Aracaju.
Digital Nomad Essentials
Internet is obviously of huge importance for digital nomads. The internet can be hit or miss based on where you are in the country. However, there are also various coworking spaces that you can check out which have reliable and well-connected internet.

Brazil Remote Work Visa Overview
Entering the list of countries that have implemented a remote work visa for digital nomads, Brazil is the first country to provide a digital nomad visa program in South America.
The government of Brazil has launched a remote worker visa for qualifying foreign nationals to live and work in the country as of January 2022. You cannot currently apply for this visa online, and you will have to go, in person, to a Brazilian consular office.
Foreigners that are employed by a foreign company who wish to work remotely in Brazil can now live and work in the country for one year. You can then renew the visa for an additional year, giving you even more time to enjoy this exciting destination with its great food, beaches, carnivals, and rainforest.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit global economies hard, especially those that rely so heavily on travel and tourism like Brazil.
The continuous growth of digital nomads and remote workers is opening a new way for such a country to restore the economy. The tropical country with luxurious resorts is welcoming deep-pocketed foreign remote workers.
The digital nomad visa program is a significant player in the new world of work that benefits both remote workers and countries in many positive ways. Remote workers can have more time to travel to learn about local culture and enjoy the wonderful nature and activities while working.
Meanwhile, the wave of digital nomads creates jobs for people of hosting countries that will help the country to financially bounce back from the effects of the pandemic. Therefore, the Brazil remote worker visa holders cannot perform local work in Brazil, either with or without an employment relationship.
At the moment, there is no information in the resolution regarding dependents, so it is not yet clear if you can sponsor dependent family members under this visa or not. Also, it is not known if any tax benefits come with the Brazil Digital Nomad Visa.
As of February 2022, the Brazilian government requires all visitors to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Vaccines including Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and Sinovac are accepted in Brazil.
You will also have to bring a negative Covid test and provide a Health Affidavit Form (DSV), which you can find here.
The vaccination requirements may be waived for certain individuals, including those who are not eligible to be vaccinated due to age, be exempt due to humanitarian reasons, or who come from territories with low vaccination coverage according to defined by the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
