Mauritius Digital Nomad Visa Overview

beautiful ariel view on ocean

Mauritius is a beautiful island located in the Indian Ocean. In October 2020, Mauritius announced its Premium Travel Visa, aimed at digital nomads who want to work remotely in Mauritius.

This visa is available not only to digital nomads but also to travelers, retirees, and other professionals, including their family members. It will allow them to reside in Mauritius for one year with the opportunity to renew.

Types Of Mauritius Digital Nomad Visas

The island of Mauritius offers a visa specially dedicated to digital nomads. This visa is called Premium Travel Visa. At the moment, the Premium Travel Visa is only available in 114 countries. However, the Economic Development Board advises nationals of other countries to apply for a tourist visa and then apply for the Premium Travel Visa during their visit.

Premium Travel Visa

The Mauritius government introduced the Premium Travel Visa to encourage long-term visits. This visa is available to digital nomads, retirees, long-term tourists, and other professionals and their family members.

The visa will grant them one year in Mauritius, with multiple entries, so they can come and go from the country as much as they wish. Plus, you’ll get the chance to renew your visa once your one-year is up.

As a digital nomad living in Mauritius under the Premium Travel Visa, you will not be imposed to pay taxes for up to six months; however, you will be considered a tax resident after 183 days of your stay. You will remain a tax resident in your home country during the length of your stay, unless you are bringing foreign money in an account in Mauritius. Above 183 days, this money will be taxable by Mauritius.

The Premium Travel Visa has no visa fees, and the approval should be made within 48 hours. However, experience shows that it might take up to 8 weeks to get this visa, and requiring the services of an agent might be helpful to do the follow-up of the application with the authorities on site. The visa application process is straightforward. Everything is done online and only takes a couple of minutes to fill out.

To apply for the Premium Travel Visa, you’ll need to complete the application online and provide a valid passport, a return ticket, proof of accommodations, and health and travel insurance. You’ll also need proof of income and must have a monthly threshold of $1500 to qualify.

Tourist Visa

If you do not qualify for the Premium Travel Visa due to your country of residence, you may apply for the Tourist Visa. Once you have this visa in Mauritius, you will be allowed to apply for the Premium Travel Visa.

Keep in mind that most countries do not need a visa to enter Mauritius. The tourist visa will allow you to visit Mauritius for up to six months.

In order to apply for the tourist visa, you’ll need to submit your application online. In addition, you must have a valid passport, a valid return ticket, confirmation of accommodations, and sufficient funds to meet the costs of your stay (approximately $100 per night).

The tourist visa is free of cost, and you’ll receive an approval within five business days.

What Mauritius Visa Type Is The Best For Digital Nomads?

The best visa for digital nomads wishing to live in Mauritius is the Premium Travel Visa. That visa is specially designed for digital nomads and other working professionals and will meet all of their needs.
