When you think about Digital Nomad destinations in South America, Uruguay might not be the first country to come to your mind. However, you might want to add it to your list. This underrated country is beautiful, and it has one of the easiest digital nomad visas to get!
In May 2023, Uruguay passed a new digital nomad law. With the new Uruguay digital nomad visa, people who wish to visit the country and work remotely can now stay for 180 days.
This digital nomad visa is aimed at remote workers and self-employed individuals who wish to live and work in Uruguay.
This visa has an easy application process and minimal requirements. Uruguay doesn’t require a minimum income from applicants, so it is extremely accessible.
One of the downsides is that you can’t apply with spouses or dependents. Each person must have their own individual application.
However, since this visa is extremely new, there is not much information regarding the whole process and benefits. We will keep updating this page as we learn more.

Depending on your nationality, it is likely you’ll need a visa to enter Uruguay. As a digital nomad, your best option is the Uruguay Digital Nomad Visa. However, there are other options that are also worth exploring
Digital Nomad Visa
In Spanish, they call it the permiso de residencia para nómades digitales (hoja de identidad provisoria – nómades)
This visa was designed for self-employed or remote workers who hold a contract with a foreign company. The Uruguay nomad visa grants you 6 months to stay in Uruguay territory, and you can renew it for 6 additional months.
The digital nomad visa for Uruguay costs approximately $10 USD. However, keep in mind that this fee can’t be paid with a foreign bank account. So, while you may apply from your home country, it might be best to wait until you’re in Uruguay territory.
Tourist Visa
Another option worth checking out is the tourist visa. If you wish to stay for a shorter time, then a tourist visa might be the best for you.

Just like any other digital nomad visa, there are certain requirements you must meet. But you’re in luck because Uruguay has the least amount of requirements. This makes the application process easy and accessible to anyone.
Clean Criminal Record
The visa application requires you show a clean criminal record. This also applies if you want to renew the visa.
Valid Passport
You must have a valid passport at the time of applying. Make sure to have copies of your document.
Proof of Financial Self-Sufficiency
The digital nomad visa for Uruguay does not require a minimum income. However, you need to have enough money to support yourself during your stay.
In order to prove this, you must sign an affidavit that states that you earn enough money working remotely to support yourself.
Proof of Accommodation
This digital nomad visa does not require you to show proof of accommodation. However, it is important you think about the place you’ll be staying and make arrangements before or during the application process.
Full Health Insurance

How to Apply for the Uruguay Digital Nomad Visa – Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1 – Create a Digital ID
Before you start the application process, you need to create a Digital ID. Go to this website and click on “Start Online Process.”
When creating your Digital ID, it will request your personal information, like name and passport information. Then, they will send you a verification email to finalize your digital ID.
Keep in mind, the website is in Spanish only, so you might want to set up a browser translator or have help from a Spanish-speaking person.
Step 2 – Fill Out the Application Form
Once you have your Digital ID, you can go back to the official website and start your application.
Log in with your Digital ID and then fill out the online form.
When it asks for your “Home Address,” you must enter the address of where you are staying in Uruguay. This information can be updated in the future.
Step 3 – Submit Your Documents
After adding all your personal information, you’ll reach a “Requested Attachments” section. Here you can upload all your documents (passport, clean criminal record, etc.)
It will also ask you how long you want to stay in Uruguay. The maximum number of days you can enter is 180, which is the length of the visa.
Once you’ve submitted all the documents, you can complete the application. You’ll receive a confirmation email.
Step 4 – Pay Visa Fee
The next step is to pay for the visa fee, which is approximately $10 USD. However, you can’t make the payment online, unless you have a credit/debit card issued by a Uruguayan bank.
Instead, you must wait until you’re inside Uruguayan territory and pay it there. But keep in mind, you must pay the fee within one day of submitting your application.
Step 5 – Receive Permit
Once you’ve made the payment of the visa fee, you only have to wait for approval and receive your visa!

Since the visa is so new, there is no clear timeline for the application process. However, you should expect to receive your visa permit on the mail within 10 days.
